Some oddball medals events, like those involving urban planning and architectural design, were part of the Olympic games around the turn of the twentieth century. Even if these are no longer held as part of the Olympic Games, urban planning and architecture still play an important role in shaping the history of this international athletic event. To ensure a safe and pleasurable edition, cities that are bidding to host must adjust their infrastructure to accommodate venues, facilities, and all the supporting structures. This is also true in Paris. Despite the city’s experience of hosting the games twice more in the past century, the modern-day Games have presented immense hurdles. With the opening ceremony just around the corner, it’s worth looking into the steps taken by local authorities and the lasting impacts of hosting the Olympics.
