Haras House: Soulful Harmony of Brick & Garden by Felipe Hess Arquitetos

Haras House

Introduction: Brick and Green’s Living Poem

Nestled in the verdant suburbs of São Paulo, Felipe Hess Arquitetos’ Haras House is more than simply a home; it’s a private conversation between everyday life, nature, and architecture. Constructed on a trapezoidal land, the design of the house frames a central courtyard, celebrating openness while fostering a sense of privacy. Every component, including landscaping, spatial organisation, and material selection, is planned to improve the human experience.

This home is a prime example of modern Brazilian design that values solitude and social interaction, creating the ideal fusion of urban elegance and rural tranquilly.

Design Idea: An Embrace with A “C” Shape

The C-shaped floor layout that encircles a verdant central courtyard is the fundamental concept of Haras House. All activities in the house centre on this open but secure area, which serves as its beating heart.

  • On one side, private spaces are placed to provide a tranquil haven.
  • In order to promote contact, social areas face the garden.
  • Service facilities are carefully tucked away, preserving the quiet both acoustically and visually.

No matter where you are, you can always see the outside thanks to this arrangement. Its architecture breathes, continuously absorbing green views, light, and air.

The Three Functional Wings

Felipe Hess separated the house into three main wings, each of which had a specific function in the residents’ day-to-day lives:

  • Private Wing: This wing has five suites, the most private of which is the master suite, which has two garden views.
  • Service Wing: This wing ensures operational efficiency without interfering with the tranquilly of living areas by housing the kitchen, laundry, staff quarters, and garage.
  • Social Core: A large living and dining space with a fireplace at its heart that is close to the pool and terrace.

This tripartite arrangement creates natural spaces for work, relaxation, and leisure while making movement inside the house intuitive.

Material Colour Scheme: Subtle Style

The architects used a colour scheme that was both rich and simple:

  • The house is grounded in warmth and timeless style by its dark brick facade.
  • Granite flooring is used in social areas because it is long-lasting and subtly luxurious.
  • Wood finishes give bedrooms and other small areas a cosy feel.

These materials are not only aesthetically pleasing; they also honour Brazil’s architectural legacy while satisfying contemporary needs for low maintenance and durability.

Roof & Form: Regulation Compliant Geometry

In order to adhere to condominium rules and to further the home’s streamlined appearance, the roof is pitched and finished in dark hues. The floor plan’s geometry is slightly influenced by the trapezoidal lot, which naturally narrows the space towards the back, where technical amenities are positioned discretely.

Landscape Integration: The Influence of Renata Tilli

Renata Tilli, a landscape architect, designed the outdoor areas to blend in with the interiors:

  • Shady spots for reading or reflection.
  • Setbacks with vegetation close to bedrooms for seclusion and cooling.
  • A large lap pool for relaxation and visual refreshment, surrounded by flora.

Each window creates a thoughtfully framed vista, transforming the surrounding landscape into a living work of art.

Ventilation & Light: Eco-Friendly Comfort

Large windows and well-placed skylights allow an abundance of natural light to enter the internal spaces. Without relying too much on mechanical cooling, cross-ventilation keeps the house comfortable.

Particularly in bathrooms, natural lighting is incorporated into the design to save energy and create a spa-like atmosphere.

The São Paulo Setting: Seclusion in a Congested City

The expansive metropolitan setting of São Paulo frequently necessitates architectural solutions that protect residences from outside commotion and noise. In order to overcome this difficulty, Haras House creates an inward-facing refuge by turning its most transparent façades towards the internal garden rather than the street.

The Architectural Language of Felipe Hess

Felipe Hess is renowned for his ability to achieve elegance in simplicity; his designs are warm and simple, practical and expressive. His strategy is shown in Haras House:

  • Spaces are active but uncluttered.
  • Materials are permitted to deteriorate naturally.
  • The architecture does not oppose change; rather, it allows life to make its mark.

This is a home meant to be lived in, not only for display.

A Day in the Haras House: Feeling the Flow

Imagine the early sun peeking through the verdant leaves as you wake up in the master suite. You open the doors to the living room, where breakfast is waiting by the pool, and stroll across the central courtyard, feeling the cool granite beneath your feet.

In the afternoon, the lap pool reflects the golden light of sunset, while the veranda provides shade for reading. The focal point of the gathering as night falls is the living room fireplace, which reverberates with hushed chatter and laughing.

The Inspiration Behind Haras House

  • Human-Centric Design: Areas are made to accommodate both socialising and isolation.
  • Link to Nature: Water features and gardens promote a more leisurely pace of existence.
  • Timeless Aesthetic: Materials and shapes selected to maintain their beauty over many years.

It’s a unique architectural endeavour that successfully combines poetry and functionality.
