The German Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is a beacon of circular economy principles. Designed by LAVA Architects in collaboration with VOSS + FISCHER and GL events, this innovative structure embodies sustainability and technological cooperation between Germany and Japan.
Circular Design: “Wa! Doitsu”
The pavilion’s theme, “Mutually shaping a circular world,” reflects a commitment to a regenerative system that minimizes waste and maximizes resource utilization. The name “Wa! Doitsu” translates to “Wow! Germany,” capturing the enthusiasm behind this groundbreaking project.
Architectural Features
- Circularity: The pavilion’s architecture and spatial design utilize seven round wooden
- structural elements, immediately conveying the theme of circularity. It unites nature and technology, blending the biosphere with the human-made technosphere to create an experiential visit.
- Cylindrical Structures: Two cylindrical structures house the exhibition and hospitality areas, merging seamlessly into a freely accessible green space. This integration of nature and built environments exemplifies the concept of “closed material cycles.”
Sustainability Goals
- Prototype for Repurposing: The German Pavilion serves as a prototype for repurposing and reusing structures. Crafted entirely from reusable materials, it showcases key elements such as indoor climate design and innovative recycled materials.
- Circular Future: By combining architecture, landscape, and exhibition programs, the pavilion highlights a circular future where architecture and urban development harmonize with nature.
Expo 2025 Osaka
Expected to draw millions of visitors, Expo 2025 Osaka is a melting pot for new technologies, products, and conversations around the built environment. Other national pavilions, including those from Bahrain and Serbia, also contribute to this global dialogue.
